Why Vaccinating Your Puppy Is So Important
Puppies are curious, playful, and full of love—but they are also still developing their immune system. Vaccines protect them from diseases they might not be strong enough to fight on their own. That’s why we always recommend starting vaccinations at the right time and following a proper plan.
At LaPet India, we meet so many pet parents who are unsure when and how to begin. This guide shares simple, expert tips so you can feel confident every step of the way.
When to Begin
Most puppies are ready for their first vaccine between six and eight weeks of age. If given too early, it might not work well. If it’s delayed too long, your puppy could be left exposed. Timing really matters.
We always make sure that every puppy from our Small Dog Shop has already begun their vaccination schedule. We also provide a chart so you know exactly what comes next.
What Vaccines Do Puppies Need?
There are a few vaccines that are considered essential for every puppy. These include protection against distemper, parvovirus, adenovirus (hepatitis), and rabies. These are called “core vaccines” and are needed to keep your puppy safe from the most serious threats.
Depending on where you live or your puppy’s breed, the vet may suggest a few additional vaccines too.
Keeping a Routine
Vaccines are given in a series, usually starting at 6–8 weeks and continuing until about 16 weeks. The final round includes the important rabies shot. After that, your puppy will only need booster shots once a year or as advised by the vet.
Following this routine gives your puppy the best chance to grow strong and stay protected. We’ll help you track everything through a health card, which you’ll receive at our Best Pet Shop in Lucknow.
After Vaccination Care
It’s normal for puppies to feel a little tired after their shots. Some may be sleepy or quiet, and the injection area may be a little sore. This usually goes away within a day.
Keep an eye on your puppy and make sure they eat, drink, and rest well. If anything feels unusual—like trouble breathing, swelling, or vomiting—call your vet immediately.
Staying Safe Until Fully Protected
Until your puppy has finished all vaccinations, it’s best to keep them away from public places like dog parks, sidewalks, or grooming salons. Their immune system is still building up, and they’re more likely to catch infections during this time.
Instead, let them play safely at home. You can still begin socialising by inviting a few healthy friends or calm pets to meet them indoors.
Rabies Vaccine Is a Must
One vaccine that’s required by law and vital for safety is the rabies shot. It’s usually given at 14 to 16 weeks. Even indoor dogs need this, as rabies is a serious disease that can spread to humans too.
We make sure every family understands the importance of this step, and we always include it in our early care advice.
